Graphic Medicine – Learn to Read and Create Comics about Health!

Thursdays from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on March 14th, March 28th, April 11th, and April 25th.

“Graphic medicine” refers to comics and graphic novels about people’s experiences with health and illness. In this 8-week program, you will meet 4 times with other teens to read graphic medicine narratives. By the end of the program, you will learn how to create a short comic about a health experience of your own.

No prior experience with comics or graphic novels required! Program for ages 13 and up.

This program is part of a research study, titled “What Health Looks Like: Using Graphic Medicine to Bring Underrepresented Voices Forward Through Public Library Health Literacy Programs,” conducted by the University of North Texas Department of Information Science. Participants will be asked to take online surveys, have program meetings recorded, and share their comics creation. At the end of the program, participants will be compensated with a set of drawing tools and a gift card.

The purposes of the study are a) to examine how reading and writing comics, also known as graphic novels, can help participants better understand health care experiences for themselves and others, and b) to collect a more diverse range of stories about health and wellness in our society. Your child's participation will influence library programming, as well as education related to healthcare.

You can visit tinyurl.com/graphicmedparentminor to view a webpage with a link to the information on the research aspect of the program. After you read through the form, you and your child will be asked to give digital signatures. An electronic copy of the consent form will be emailed to you. Alternatively, you can ask for a physical copy at the front desk of the Prairie Creek branch library.

If you have any questions about the information in the form please contact Dr. Sarah Evans via email at sarah.evans@unt.edu or by phone at 940-369-8102.
