May Book Club Selection: Loyalty by Avi
History isn’t just about famous names and old dates—it’s about real people making choices that shaped our world. In the America250 Junior Book Club, we explore stories from America’s past to better understand how we got here today—and how young people can help shape what comes next.
Our May book, Loyalty by Avi, takes readers into the tense days of 1774 Boston as young Billy, a British soldier’s servant, is caught between loyalty to the Crown and friendship with the Patriots. As unrest grows following the Boston Tea Party, Billy must decide where he stands. Through fast-paced storytelling and rich historical detail, the novel explores courage, conscience, and the difficult choices ordinary people—especially young people—faced on the brink of the American Revolution.
Join us as we discover how kids in history faced big challenges, made tough decisions, and played important roles in shaping America’s story—just like they can today.
It’s been 250 years since the Declaration of Independence was signed! Since then, America has grown as more voices, communities, and thoughts continue to create the America we know today. To mark this milestone, communities across the country are joining the nationwide America250 celebration. This program is part of Dallas Public Library's 250 Years of Us: Reading America's Past, Writing Our Future.
Dive into the past all year long, as we host programs, exhibits and book clubs that explore how our nation’s history has shaped American democracy today. Anyone can join our Amazing Race for Independence challenge and win Dallas Mavericks or Wings tickets, State Park passes and more! Every book read from the reading list, program attended or exhibit visited counts as an entry.
