Event Details

The Beauty of South Dallas captures the rapid change of a historical neighborhood due to socio-economic shifts and documents South Dallas for future residents, visionaries, and developers.

Nitashia Johnson began the project in 2020 as an inaugural artist for the Juanita J. Craft House Residency Initiative. Over a three-month period, she endeavored to connect to and showcase the residents, business owners, community leaders, and neighborhoods in the community. The goal of the project is to preserve a period in time that tells us where the neighborhood is before it changes.

“The art of storytelling has always influenced my multimedia artwork.
My eagerness and love for the world and others have pushed me to
produce a body of work highlighting environmental spaces,
communities, and individual muses. When I started working on the
residency project titled 'The Beauty of South Dallas, Capturing the Now
Before the Future," I was excited yet nervous about where to begin.
South Dallas is a large area, and I wanted to capture the spirit of the
people and the land. It also had a significant impact on my life.”
