Author Brian DiNuzzo will be doing a public reading and author signing of his recently published collection of short stories, Hoaxes & Other Stories.

About: The stories in DiNuzzo’s inventive, mischievous debut collection come straight at the reader, as if the author is making them up as he goes along. Frequently, the title and opening line offer the premise with no frills (for example, “Undeniable Proof of the Bigfoot” begins: “Grandpa Charlie shot a bigfoot the day I was born”), then the author riffs freely on the conceit (in “Bigfoot,” the grandfather’s’ cozy routine of regaling audiences in VFW halls and libraries with his story is upended by a vocal skeptic). “The Pub Runner” follows a loopy race in which the runners stop for drinks along the route. In “Leaving,” fearful flyer Gabe Padukah sits in the Knoxville airport contemplating various tragic scenarios. Fortunately, most of these tales end at an appropriate time, never wearing out their welcome by straining too hard for humor. The longer, more complex closer, “Sisters,” defies the format and finds its own success. With compassion and calibrated sentiment, it chronicles the deep lifelong friendship of sisters Maura and Kathy, 11 months apart and dubbed “Irish twins” by all who know them. It’s a fitting finale, demonstrating that DiNuzzo can do more than poke fun at the foibles and excesses of human nature, and that he understands the importance of loving human relationships. The writer is off to a strong start. (Mar.2022, Publisher's Weekly)
