Texas, the second-largest state in the United States, wait just a moment and take in this statement. The U.S. covers over 3.5 million square miles and boasts a diverse and extensive range of ecosystems from the mountains to the prairies, to the oceans. Within these areas, there are between 428 and 490 species of mammals.
Texas covers over 268,000 square miles and our state is generally divided into 10 natural regions or ecoregions from the Piney Woods to the Gulf Prairies and marshes. It’s big, and each region boasts amazing local flora and fauna.
What about the cities such as Dallas, the ninth largest in the U.S. and 3rd largest in Texas. How does the urban landscape affect the ecosystems and the local mammals? To find out more about this topic, we have an expert with us sharing about these critters, Tim Brys from Perot Museum of Nature and Science.
These animals are still thriving through adaptation and resilience, but it’s aways important to learn more about how to reduce our impact on our sometimes quirky, witty, or surprising wild neighbors.
Tim Brys, Community Engagement Collections Manager, joins us today from Perot Museum of Nature and Science to give us a glimpse into these communities and the museum.
