Coming to a sky near you on October 14: a partial solar eclipse! Get ready to experience this astronomical wonder with programs that will inform and entertain both young and old!

 


An important safety note: Do not look directly at the sun during an eclipse! Doing so will cause serious damage to your eyes. Be sure to use eclipse glasses or use an indirect observation method. We will have a limited supply of eclipse glasses available during our watch parties, but you can make indirect viewers in one of our free DIY craft programs!

Constellation Projection Cards

A solar eclipse brings out our love for everything space-related! Create constellation projection cards by picking out your favorite constellation and projecting it onto any surface using light!

Make Your Own Eclipse Camera!

Safely view the upcoming solar eclipse with a handmade pinhole camera! We'll make our own devices from simple household items and learn about the science of the solar eclipse and how the cameras we build keep us safe while we view it.

Cereal Box Eclipse Viewer

You'll be prepared to safely view the eclipse on October 14 with just a cereal box, foil, a little paper and some tape! Come and make your own viewer to take home.

Celebrate the upcoming eclipse and flex your creative muscles!  We will create new art from recycled works, taking pages of prose and forming them into poetry related to the eclipse, the Moon, the galaxy, the universe or wherever your muse may take you!

Master Naturalists presents: The Moon & Nature at Night

Learn to live in tune with the moon! After you hear from local author Amy Martin (the Moonlady herself!),  you'll be a pro-level Moon watcher understanding the synchrony of the Moon and tides, how the Moon led to life on Earth and how the Moon impacts urban plants and wildlife.

James Webb Space Telescope

Learn more about the James Webb Space Telescope from an expert scientist! Walk our exhibit to see the magnitude of the telescope and the beautiful photos it captures from outer space. Then, hear from Longitude Fellow Louis Noel on the science behind the telescope and learn more about space exploration.

ECLIPSE VIEWING PARTIES

Need a place to view the solar eclipse? Don't have any glasses? Never fear... the library is here!
Go to one of the viewing parties below and learn about the annular solar eclipse, how it happens and what it is. Look up and watch as science happens before your (protected) eyes! All locations will have a limited supply of viewing glasses to hand out for safe viewing. And each location will have special eclipse-related activities for all ages.
