Event Details

"Freeman's Town to Botham Jean: Stories For Racial Healing" is a live storytelling show featuring 7 Dallasites performing their true, personal stories about racial tension in Dallas. Directed by master storyteller Dr. Njoki McElroy and produced by Oral Fixation (An Obsession With True Life Tale)’s Nicole Stewart, this magical storytelling experience will entertain and inform the audience.

The first story, told by Dr. Njoki McElroy, will introduce the idea of Freedman's Town and paint a picture of a time when there was a vibrant black community in Dallas. Subsequent stories will reveal how displacement and cultural appropriation broke down the black family unit resulting in the widely held belief that black men are dangerous. The stories will take us through time to the 2016 police shooting and ending with a story from a loved one of Botham Jean. The show will provide historical context to racial tension in Dallas while offering a very personal lens through which to understand what our wounds are so we may acknowledge and heal them.
