Genealogy Network of Texas Family History Celebration

Join the Genealogy & History Division of the Dallas Public Library for a free Family History Month celebration from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. on the 8th Floor of the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library.  Staff, volunteers and library computers will be available to help those new to genealogy and experienced researchers alike.

A series of eight programs will be live-streamed from 10 a.m. to  8:30 p.m.   The programs are provided by the Genealogy Network of Texas (GNT), a state-wide initiative to connect libraries/genealogical societies and provide educational and research opportunities. Topics covered will include census records, brick-wall research, autosomal DNA, Native American ancestors, preserving photographs, using land records, and locating female ancestors.  Get the schedule of live-streamed events here.

Additionally, the Dallas Public Library in partnership with the Dallas Genealogical Society will be providing local presentations, one-on-one genealogical help and door prizes.  Come join the fun at one of the top 10 genealogical libraries in the United States.

• 1:30 p.m.  to 2:30 p.m. RootsMagic – Tresa Tatyrek 

An introduction to how to use RootsMagic software to organize your family tree (Brown Bag Lunch Session) 

• 2:45 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. Genealogy Pitfalls – Jim Thornhill 

Learn about the top ten pitfalls any genealogy researcher might fall into and best practices of how to avoid them. 

• 5:15 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. Family Tree Maker – Tresa Tatyrek 

  An introduction to how to use Family Tree Maker software to organize your family tree.  

• 7:15 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. Back to Basics – Jim Thornhill 

A class for beginning to intermediate researchers that discusses what decisions that need to be made when you are starting your family history, such as what platform you will use, basing your family tree on evidence, backing up your family tree, and then move on to an overview of Ancestry, Family Search, and HeritageQuest, including how to access the collections as well as just searching by name.
