Event Details
Celebrate the installation of the new Texas State Historical Marker commemorating the life and historical contributions of Dr. Walter Ree McMillan and the McMillan Sanitarium, which he founded in Dallas in 1923. The sanitarium was located just north of downtown Dallas in the neighborhood that is now known as Uptown.
Uptown Dallas, once one of Dallas’ most prominent Freedman’s towns, was the epicenter of African American life and culture post emancipation. Dr. Walter R. McMillan and the McMillan Sanitarium was a vital part of that community, offering much needed services including surgical facilities, doctor’s offices, a pharmacy, a barbershop and a cleaners.
The marker is the culmination of work by Remembering Black Dallas Inc., whose mission it is to preserve and promote African American life, history, artifacts, and culture of Dallas and its surrounding cities.
The historical marker will be located outside of Comet Cleaners at 2404 N. Hall Street.
