Presenter: Patrick M. Oliver, author, literary consultant and founder speakloudly.com 

Patrick M. Oliver who has worked with Just Us Books, Inc for over 20 years will share information about the history of the children's book publisher Just Us Books, Inc. is an independent publisher of children’s books that celebrate the diversity of Black people, history, and culture. Founded in 1988 by Wade Hudson and Cheryl Willis-Hudson, its titles include board books, picture books, non-fiction, poetry, middle reader series, and novels for young adults. In 35 years of operation, Just Us Books has become an institution in children’s publishing and remains one of the nation’s few Black-owned presses.

 

Activity: Create Your Own Vision Book

Participants will create a six-page children's book template with color cover at the end of the session. 

Duration: 35 to 40 minutes 

Supplies: White copy paper, construction paper, pencils, crayons, magazines, art supplies, found objects, staple machines, three-hole punch, yarn and scissors.

Front and Back Covers

Front and back covers will be color construction paper. Magazines, art supplies or found objects can be used to make the front cover appealing.  

 

Binding

The students will use staplers or yarn to bind the pages.
