It's the fifth month of the Bachman Lake Book Club! This month, we will be reading the iconic dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty Four by George Orwell.
In this fictional timeline, Great Britain has been rechristened as "Airstrip One," a territory of the superstate Oceania, and The Party rules supreme. Winston Smith is a government employee with the Ministry of Truth who is tasked with altering historical records to suit whatever the Party needs them to be. Winston secretly hates the Party and wishes to rebel against it. But Big Brother is always watching for "thought-criminals" like Winston.
It is often regarded not just as Orwell's masterpiece, but one of the finest novels written during the twentieth century. Moreover, it made significant contributions to popular vocabulary and political theory. "Thought Police," "Newspeak," "doublethink," "thoughtcrime," are among just some of the terms that originated in this very novel.
