More information about HIV testing from Parkland:
What HIV test is used?
A rapid antigen/antibody test is used. When the body is
exposed to a virus, the immune system produces
antibodies that defend against foreign substances called
antigens. The rapid test looks for the specic HIV antigen.
How long do I wait?
Results will be available in about one minute. All testing is
free and private.
How often should I test?
Plan to test every 3 months. After exposure, the virus
could take 3-6 months to be detected. Educate yourself
and promote testing to friends and family. Help stop the
HIV virus from spreading.
How does someone with HIV prevent
spreading the virus?
An undetectable viral load is achieved by taking
antiretroviral therapy (ART) as prescribed. People living
with HIV who are U=U, or Undetected=Untransmittable,
are not “cured,” but there is a little virus in their system.
This sometimes means that modern testing may not nd
HIV in the blood. When HIV is not detected in laboratory
tests, the person is considered undetectable. When a
person is undetectable the HIV virus cannot be
transmitted to a sex partner or drug-using partner. ART
prevents HIV exposure, use condoms to prevent other STIs.
