Program Description

Event Details

This Jane’s Walk will take us from the Martin Luther King Branch Library to the Juanita Craft Civil Rights House as we explore the stories that shaped South Dallas.  Looking at the neighborhood through the lens of America250, we’ll talk about how the neighborhood’s history—its struggles, its activism, and its incredible community spirit—connects back to the broader American story. It’s a chance to look at how the freedoms outlined in the Declaration of Independence were not shared by all Americans, and how people here have worked generation after generation to move our country closer to those ideals.  Walkers will tour the Juanita Craft Civil Rights House and learn about local civil rights pioneer, activist and politician, Juanita Craft, before walking back to the Martin Luther King Branch Library.

The walk is just over a mile total and will be done at a relaxed pace.

This program is part of Dallas Public Library's 250 Years of Us: Reading America's Past, Writing Our Future, brought to you by (event sponsors).

Anyone can join our Amazing Race for Independence challenge and win sports tickets, State Park passes and more!

Jane’s Walk is an annual festival of free, community-led walking conversations inspired by Jane Jacobs. On the first weekend of May every year, Jane’s Walk festivals take place in hundreds of cities around the world. Jane’s Walks encourage people to share stories about their neighborhoods, discover unseen aspects of their communities, and use walking as a way to connect with their neighbors.

America250 is the national celebration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 2026. The journey toward this historic milestone is an opportunity to pause and reflect on our nation’s past, honor the contributions of all Americans, and look ahead toward the future we want to create for the next generation and beyond.
