How are rhythms different or similar? How does rhythm affect mood? How is mood expressed in various art forms, such as song, story and dance? Children have always been fascinated by the sound of drums, bells, shakers and other percussion instruments. They enjoy comparing patterns of movement such as sliding, rolling, spinning and thumping as they work with various instruments. In WorldBeat students explore the science and art of sound. They experience rhythm variations, listen to, identify, respond to and distinguish rhythms from around the world. And, they explore how various cultures use the language of music to communicate their messages. Participants work with authentic African and Afro-Caribbean instruments as they: 1) demonstrate musical sound – tempo, pitch, volume 2) create personal expression – through improvisation/movement/song and 3) explore multicultural connections – from Africa, South America and the Caribbean. This program is presented by Big Thought.
