Welcome to our Lunch and Learn series where we will invite local experts to discuss topics of interest from history to philosophy to science and more. This month will feature Pablo Mijangos, who is a historian of Mexico and Latin America at SMU. In his talk, Pablo will challenge deeply entrenched narratives about the quintessentially undemocratic and authoritarian nature of Mexican political culture, as embodied in infamous caudillos such as Antonio López de Santa Anna. Drawing on recent historiography, he will demonstrate that Mexicans enthusiastically adopted republican culture and democratic practices from the early years of their nation and discuss the factors that, at different moments during the nineteenth century, thwarted—but never extinguished—Mexicans' longing for self-government.
