Welcome to our Lunch and Learn series where we will invite local experts to discuss topics of interest from history to philosophy to science and more. In honor of the upcoming spooky season this month, local literary instructor and adaptation scholar, Joy Morrow, will be talking all about vampires.
Her talk, titled “Dracula and his Contemporaries,” will focus on the rise of the vampire in British literature in the Victorian period. While "Dracula" is the most famous novel to come from this time, it was not the only vampiric story that captured popular imagination in the period. Alongside "Dracula," Joy will talk about three other vampire novels that came out around the same time and, by looking at these four novels, she will illustrate what was appealing and scary about vampires at this time. Her talk will then conclude with considering what about these Victorian vampires still appeals to us today. Bring your lunch, join the coven, and learn with us!
