According to the National Institute of Drug Abuse, roughly 21 to 29 percent of patients prescribed opioids for chronic pain misuse them and about 80 percent of people who use heroin first misused prescription opioids. This is the leading cause of the U.S. opioid epidemic, affecting Americans of all ages.
