Event Details

Create paper quilts inspired by the quiltmakers of Gee's Bend, Alabama!

Gee's Bend (officially Boykin) is a small, isolated settlement in Alabama populated by many descendants of formerly enslaved families. It is best known for the group of women who continue the tradition of making quilts in the style of their foremothers, influenced by traditional African and Native-American textiles, and traditionally made with various fabric scraps that give the quilts their vibrant and distinct appearance.

Participation in this craft will provide the opportunity to learn not only about this hidden gem of Black history, but also to learn about patterns, geometry, abstraction, and improvisation techniques in creating quilts.
