The fashion industry has an enormous impact on both the environment and society. Monica Monyo-Tetteh, of That's Sew Monica, discusses sustainability in fashion, using fashion to foster communities and empowerment through learned skills.
Monica Monyo-Tetteh is a Senior Public Information Officer for the Park and Recreation Department. She is known in the sewing community as That's Sew Monica. Born and raised in New York city with roots from Ghana, West Africa, she took up sewing to connect to her late mother who also sewed. Monica has a passion for sewing and the sewing community. She is one of the owners of Sewrority Wear, LLC a sewing apparel company that provides paraphernalia and novelty items. She hosts a monthly sew-a-long called SEWYOURVIEW on Instagram as well as a monthly in person sewing meetup of all day sewing with friends called Project Sew that takes place in Dallas, TX and a few other cities. Her YouTube channel called "On the Road with That's Sew Monica" highlights the Dallas area fashion district, home sewers and designers. In addition to all the above in June of 2020, Monica's leadership led her to form Black Makers Matter, a coalition of black makers united to bring about and implement cultural transformation in the sewing and crafting industry. Black Makers Matter envisions a creative landscape that lovingly reflects black makers, voices and their diversity within the maker community.
