Juneteenth National Independence Day is officially celebrated on the anniversary of June 19, 1865, the date that slavery ended in the United States with the enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas following the end of the Civil War. Since 1866, communities have been gathering to celebrate this historic holiday which became federally recognized in 2021.

 

 


Juneteenth Heart Garlands

Celebrate freedom and creativity with a colorful craft that speaks from the heart! In this Juneteenth celebration, kids will create vibrant heart garlands to honor the spirit of unity and independence.

Bandan Koro: A Juneteenth Experience

This will be a special performance by Bandan Koro, an African Drum and Dance ensemble dedicated to fostering a greater awareness, understanding, appreciation, and respect for African-related music, dance, and culture. Learn about Africa and its beautiful, diverse customs as we listen and watch Bandan Koro perform special musical and dance numbers!

Celebrate Freedom Day at the Forest Green Branch Library!  This year, the library will be hosting a festival to commemorate this important holiday, featuring music, dance performances, food, and local vendors.
