Event Details

 

Coming to a sky near you on April 8: a full solar eclipse! Get ready to experience this astronomical wonder with programs that will inform and entertain both young and old!

An important safety note: Do not look directly at the sun during an eclipse! Doing so will cause serious damage to your eyes. Be sure to use eclipse glasses or use an indirect observation method. 

ECLIPSE VIEWING PARTIES

Need a place to view the solar eclipse? Don't have any glasses? Never fear... the library is here!
Go to one of the viewing parties below and learn more about the solar eclipse, then look up and watch as science happens before your (protected) eyes! All locations will have a limited supply of viewing glasses to hand out for safe viewing. Each location will also have special eclipse-related activities for all ages.

Eclipse Craft: Galaxy Slime

Prepare for the upcoming total solar eclipse by creating your very own galaxy-themed slime! Practice your chemistry and measuring skills in this engaging craft, and don't forget to pick up a pair of solar eclipse glasses, so you can view this upcoming astronomical event. Materials provided while supplies last.

Get ready for the eclipse by making moon phase spinners. Best for ages 6-11 years. All supplies will be provided.

Totally Eclipsed at Dallas West: Phases of the Moon

Wednesday, April 3 at 4 p.m., Dallas West Branch 

Before the Moon struts her path to block the Sun, learn about the moon's regular phases and why she can still totally block the Sun even though she'll be in her New Moon Era. Participants will receive a pair of eclipse viewing glasses! Supplies are limited - first come, first served.

What will the upcoming total eclipse look like? Get a preview as you create the "ring of fire" effect with chalk on paper.

Prepare for the upcoming eclipse with the Space Portal Odyssey Capsule portable planetarium brought to us by the Frontiers of Flight! 

 

Solar Eclipse Crafts

Saturday, April 6 at 2 p.m., J. Erik Jonsson Central Library

Construct Moon Phase Spinners to visualize the various lunar stages in orbit. Or concoct your very own Galaxy Slime, resembling the cosmic mysteries of the universe. (Suggested ages: 6 to 11 years)

 

Frontiers of Flight Museum: My Moon My Sky

Saturday, April 6 at 3 p.m., Lochwood Branch  

Learn about the different types of stars (including our Sun), the Earth and Moon by comparing size, color and position. Zooming in on the Moon, we’ll complete a lunar month identifying the Moon’s phases and surface composition.

 

Adult Craft: Solar Eclipse Tote Bags

Celebrate the eclipse by making your own Solar Eclipse tote bags! All materials will be supplied and free solar eclipse glasses will be included.

Animals and the Eclipse

What happens when animals feel changes in the earth or weather patterns? Do they act differently or even feel it before we do? Interact with some live animals and learn about the strange things they do in response to the Earth's changing patterns.

The Earth isn’t the only planet keeping our sun company! This presentation will use a digital globe and movement activities to journey out to our sun and its planets.  We’ll also see how solar and lunar eclipses happen.
